2009 Migrant State Conference Pre-Conference Academies


Administrator Academy
Presenters: Roger Rosenthal, Christina Villarreal, and David Straus

Target Audience: Migrant  Directors/Coordinators, Principals, Assistant Principals, and Central Office Administrators

Description: The Administrative Academy will provide participants an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of the requirements of the Title I, Part C Migrant Education Program of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act. This workshop will bring participants up-to-date on issues and initiatives affecting coordination of services for eligible migrant students, program regulations and compliance indicators. Participants will learn more about the Comprehensive Needs Assessment results, MEP Service Delivery Plan, and new MEP regulations published in the August 28, 2008 Federal Register. The academy will also focus on the national legal perspective of the Migrant Education Program as it relates to the Texas state perspective, and to the local education agency perspective (NGS and MSIX, Priority for Services and Identification and Recruitment action plans). Information on migrant program resources such as the National Migrant Education Program Hotline, the Migrant Education Resource Center (MERC), as well as materials, Listservs and numerous resources available from the Texas Education Agency will be highlighted.

ID & R Academy
Presenters: TEA Staff

Target Audience: Recruiters, COE Reviewers and other personnel involved in the identification and recruitment of eligible migrant students

Description: The ID & R Academy will provide opportunities for recruiters to identify strategies and solutions to address needs and concerns related to eligibility questions, conducting interviews, proper documentation, follow-up and on-going training resources such as the Weekly Recruiter and other tools. It is an opportunity to exchange ideas and strategies with other Texas Migrant Program Recruiters. This ID & R Academy will have major emphasis on the implementation of the new Federal Register that became effective August 28, 2008.

NGS Academy
Presenters: TEA Staff

Target Audience: NGS Data Specialists

Description:The NGS Academy will provide participants with new 2009-2010 NGS enhancements. Participants will be provided with meaningful learning experiences through demonstrations and discussions of new data fields. Included in this year's NGS Academy will be an overview on the use of the Report Generator with sample reports.

Counselor Academy
Presenters: Minerva Ibarra

Target Audience: Instructional Leaders, Teachers, and Counselors

Description: House Bill 1 (79th Legislature) required Texas to adopt higher curriculum standards to meet graduation requirements under the Recommended and Distinguished Achievement Programs. These higher standards, commonly referred to as the 4x4 (due to the fact that students must earn four credits in each of the four core content areas - English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies), came into effect with the freshman class of 2007-2008. These changes have a big impact for all students in Texas. This workshop will give a comprehensive overview of these changes for all students, including legislative changes that impact graduation and post-secondary opportunities for students. In addition, implications for migrant education students and migrant education programs will be discussed.

Parent Academy

Description:Achieving True Success: How to Build Character as a Family
This session will be delivered in Spanish for parents and will address character building in the family unit. Families will learn to center their lives on qualities that bring success and harmony in their immediate family as well as the extended family. It is designed to view life from a positive perspective and strengthen the family by learning true harmony and genuine appreciation for each family member and those outside the family. This session will empower parents to better raise and manage a family amidst the stress and mundane chores of a household. This session guarantees to make participants laugh, cry, learn, and be 100% engaged at all times.
